Behind the Scenes: Life as a Craft Show Vendor

What really happens before, during, and after the booth goes up.

Today is prep day for our second August show, and if you've ever wondered what goes into setting up a craft show booth, let me pull back the curtain.

It starts with inventory. Every headband gets counted, replenished, and joined by the newest designs fresh off the workbench. Then comes the mental checklist — headbands, lights, tables, tablecloths, tent, mirrors — running through it once, twice, three times, because experience has taught me that confidence and forgetfulness can coexist. There was that one time I arrived at a show without one of my display racks. Cue the improvisation. Everything worked out, the booth looked great, and I gained a new appreciation for creative problem-solving under pressure.

But once the tent is up and the first customers start wandering in? That's where the magic happens.

One of my favorite things about doing craft shows is the people. Fellow makers sharing their stories, customers traveling from across the country, browsers who came for a stroll and stayed for a conversation. There's an energy at these events that's hard to describe — a genuine sense of community built around handmade things and the people who love them.

And then there's the moment. You know the one. A customer picks up a headband, tries it on almost hesitantly, and then — their face changes. The surprise is real. "Wait… it doesn't hurt?" They'll admit they almost didn't try it on because they were sure it would squeeze their head. That reaction, every single time, absolutely makes my day.

A close second? When someone walks up to the booth wearing a headband they bought at a previous show, proudly showing it off. That's not just a happy customer — that's someone who loved their purchase enough to wear it out into the world and come back to tell me about it.

But my absolute favorite craft show moment? The customer who bought a headband one day, wore it all day long — and came back the next morning to buy more. They had completely forgotten they were wearing it. That's the whole point, really. A headband so comfortable, so beautiful, that it just becomes part of your day.

That's why we do this. See you at the show.
